Working directly onto ready-made objects, such as vinyl records, album sleeves and other music ephemera, Dolphin arduously scratches passages of minute, immaculate text (usually a transcription of the lyrics) into their surfaces. The album covers bear the signs of familiar handling over years, suggesting an intimacy with the artist – objects that have been owned, used and treasured. Four identical pressings of the same song however remind the viewer that these are mass-produced multiples and that the artist’s obsessive reworking is one step removed.
