For these pairs of laser-cut paper portraits Julian Opie worked with the Mike Smith studio to research paper-cut images to produce an edition of portraits which would be similar to Victorian silhouette portraits, with elliptical frames and blown domed glazing. They are produced from cut black and white papers laminated together, certain elements are highly detailed and extremely fragile. The finished images are framed in a machined material, sprayed to give a waxy black finish.
