Artist / Shaan Syed
Information
Syed is a young Canadian artist who came to the UK to do an MA at Goldsmiths. He arrived as a realist figure painter and has spent the last few years finding ways of suggesting the figure’s presence in a work without actually including it. He refers to these works as ‘stage’ paintings – inspired by rock concert light shows where the stage is set, the lights are up and the expectation is great – but the image has become increasingly abstract and the interest is now in the build up of shapes and patters, depth and movement, referencing Malevich and early modernism and creating a tension between abstraction and figuration.
